Conversion

Hello, all! I hope you're having a great Friday. Here's the interesting question I found in my little black book of questions.

If you had to convert to a different religion, which would you choose?

For me, it would be Judaism, for a number of reasons. First of all, both Christians and Jews worship the God of the Bible, so it would be closest to what I already hold as truth. Secondly, I admire the Jewish emphasis on family and community, and the rabbinic tradition of interpreting the Scriptures.

What about you? And if you aren't religious, which religion most appeals to you?

  1. Great question, I come from a very eclectic upbringing to say the least, raised Unitarian from parents of Jewish descent, now practice Buddhism and Zen. I have a brother who is Christian and niece who is a orthodox Jew.
"Many people, one God" like they say in the Islands.

  2. I'm not religious, but probably gravitate more toward Buddhism myself, though I do believe in a higher power. Makes finding the right church for me a bit tricky. :-)

My sister ended up converting to Islam because it's also very similar to Christianity and Judaism... I never knew how much so until she began teaching me about it. It's fascinating to me how similar all three of those really are.

  3. I am Science of Mind (not Scientologist) currently, but if I had to convert, it would be Buddhism.

  4. Fascinating - we were just talking this evening about Judaism because my son's friend had to get home before sundown, and we discussed how interesting it is to share a faith in one God yet differ at the point of salvation...

  5. Goodness - what a question!

It is hard to imagine following another religion other than Christianity. I imagine I like you would choose Judaism but think I need to think about it a bit more.

  7. Can I be Catholic instead of Protestant? Is that different enough? If not, I'd have to go with Judaism too.

  8. I'm Roman Catholic but probably a little more liberal than the typical Catholic.

My best friend in the whole world is Hindu. I've learned so much about her religion over the years (been friends since kindergarten... roughly 28 years) and I've always been intrigued by it. She explained parts of it to me that just seem very beautiful and peaceful.

  9. Since this is the stuff of conjecture I can be unrealistic, right? Mennonite. I love the sense of community and the focus on agrarian.

    I'd never make it though.

  10. A toss between Judaism and Mormonism.

  11. Hi Alison,

Just blog hopping and found you via... hrm. I think it was Suburban Correspondent, but it might have been Bad Mom. Too many tabs on the go!

I am not religious at all, and I don't have any desire or need to gravitate towards anything organized. It's all so cult-like, and so flawed. That said, I don't begrudge (or judge) anyone for their beliefs. If you live as a good person, that is pretty much all that matters.

I read your other posts as well - will keep my fingers crossed for your test results and pending job offer!

Come visit when you have time :)
