Philosopical Friday

With all the themed participatory weekly posts out there like "Works-for-Me-Wednesday" and "Friday Fill Ins," it occurred to me that I could call my posts that answer questions from the book If... "Philosophical Friday." But I'm sorry, I cannot call it Filosophical Friday because that would cause me physical pain.

Anyway, the questions are more hypothetical than philosophical, if that difference matters--although some of the answers may reveal your philosophy of life. I don't know; I don't know enough about philosophy. It's too deep for me.

Here's the next question.

If you could have stopped aging at any point of your life up to the present, how old would you want to remain?

I remember using this question as an icebreaker for our small group, and most people said they wanted to be young and relatively carefree (i.e. no kids) but still old enough to have a responsible job so they could have money, etc. So they agreed they'd like to be 25 or so.

Not me. I'd like to stay right where I am. I love being in my early 30s. I have more confidence and optimism than I've ever had, and I don't care nearly as much as I used to about what people think of me. I have good friends, an amazing husband, and the best kids I could ask for. When I was in my early 2os, I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life, I cried a lot, and I frequently agonized over whether I should go ahead and have a baby. (Answer to my younger self: yes, you nitwit. On one level, you will never be ready, but it's the best thing that will ever happen to you.) Plus, since I didn't know what I wanted to do with my life, I didn't have a full-time job or the disposable income that comes with it.

So being 33 isn't so bad. I wouldn't mind staying here as long as Mr. Blue gets out of this annoying screaming stage.

What about you? Would you like to be younger or are you happier at your current stage of life?

  1. I am 28, and I'm completely happy where I am right now. I've finally gotten to the point where I'm able to stand up for myself against the people who try to conform me to the image they want me to be, and not be such a pushover. Not even a year ago I was still lacking the amount of self-control I'm beginning to discover within myself, and I like the person I'm shaping up to be.

I got married before I even graduated college and there wasn't much downtime before we had kids, so I can't say I'd go back there. Because I was too young to know much of anything, really. And there's no way you could pay me to go back any farther than that.

Nope, I'll stay right here, thank you very much.

(And just because I think it's funny, my DH would stay 29, too. Because according to our 5-year-old, "30 is almost the last number on Earth!")

  2. I'd freeze it a month ago. The kitchen was finished, life was PERFECT, all our tomorrows looked bright.

Then Mr de Elba got that new job and now everything is upside down!

But ask me in a year and I'll probably say I'm glad the time went marching forward!

  3. I would have liked to frozen time at the age of 23. I had a great job, nice car, house and was nice and skinny. I still love my body as it serves me well, but it's not like it used to be!

  4. Good question.... 37 isn't that bad, but I wouldn't mind getting rid of a few wrinkles. sigh.

I am taking the afternoon to read new blogs. I hope you do not mind me stopping by. Feel free to check out my blog. I am having a give-a-way that will end on Monday. Three winners! :D

  5. 35 was the perfect age for me. Not too young. Not too old.

  6. Oh, the early 30s were a great time - I agree with you. That's an excellent slice of time to pick. I might pick that one, too, now that you mention it.

    Very interesting question...

I think I'd slap my current noggin/frame of mind/etc. on the late 20s/early 30s health/energy level. That would be awesome!

Hope you're having a great weekend...

  7. I'm happier than ever right now. Not going back for anything. Well, maybe for my thin thighs. Maybe that.

  8. Definitely happier where I am now. I have had health problems since I was tiny. Now that I'm 33, I have most of them under control. I actually like I'm reverse aging!

  9. If I could have the knowledge and life experience I have now, but with my body from my 20s and the carefree nature of my early 30s I'd be happy.
But then I wouldn't have my children, so actually, I'll say 40 because it's pretty brilliant up here
